Patient ResourcesPrevention playbook

The Period Pain Prevention Playbook

A cycle-by-cycle protocol for getting ahead of cramps instead of chasing them.

Everything you’ve been taught about treating period pain has the timing backwards. This is the full protocol — what to do in the days before, what actually has evidence behind it, and the checkpoint that tells you when it’s time to see someone.

Prostaglandin-inhibiting medication works by blocking production of the compounds that drive cramping — so it must be started one to two days before pain is expected, and continued on schedule, not as needed. Standard treatment started correctly buys effective relief for 70–90% of people, better than placebo. If it still isn’t controlled after two to three properly-run cycles, that’s the signal to be seen — not another year of chasing it.
