Is My Period Normal? A Physician's Guide to Bleeding and Pain

Almost everyone has been told their period is normal at some point. Very few people have been told what normal actually means. Here are the numbers, where they come from, and how honest they are.

A normal cycle arrives every 24 to 38 days, bleeding lasts 8 days or fewer, and your shortest and longest cycles differ by no more than about a week. Volume has no normal number. Bleeding counts as heavy when it interferes with your physical, social, emotional, or working life — your judgement, not a measurement.
