Is spotting normal?

Spotting between periods is common and is often caused by normal hormonal changes. While unexpected bleeding can feel concerning, occasional spotting is usually not harmful and can be part of how your body responds to hormonal shifts.

What is spotting?

Spotting can be understood as light vaginal bleeding that occurs outside of your regular menstrual period. It’s unlike a typical period as it’s usually very minimal and doesn’t last for several days.

Causes:

  • Hormonal fluctuations around ovulation.
  • Starting or changing birth control as your body is adjusting.
  • Early pregnancy, such as implantation bleeding.

Occasional spotting can also be influenced by stress, illness, travel or changes in routine.

When to pay closer attention:

Occasional spotting is normal although it’s worth checking with a healthcare provider if it happens frequently, lasts multiple days or is accompanied by other symptoms.

Spotting is often a reflection of hormonal communication within your body. Learning what’s normal for your individual cycle can help you recognize patterns and better understand your reproductive health.
